Buddhist Scriptures Penguin Classics Paperback August 31, 2004

**** The "Buddhist Scriptures" from Penguin Classics has been well-received by customers, who praise it as a valuable resource for both beginner and advanced students of Buddhism. Many appreciate the thoughtful selection of texts that span various schools and movements within Buddhism. The compilation, featuring 60 selected scriptures, is highlighted for its outstanding introductory context provided for each text, which enhances the reader's understanding and engagement with the material. Readers note that the anthology is not just limited to philosophical teachings, but also includes instructive fables and tales, making it a well-rounded collection that appeals to different interests. The insightful stories, including ones that resonate with parables from other traditions, further enrich the anthology and foster critical reflection on the teachings. Those familiar with Buddhist literature particularly value this collection as a complement to other compilations available, suggesting that having multiple resources can deepen one’s understanding of the teachings. However, a few reviewers pointed out a significant gap; they expressed a desire for a deeper introduction to the origins of the earliest Buddhist scriptures as well as an analysis of their contextual development over time. This lack of foundational analysis leads some users to rate the book slightly lower than a perfect score despite recognizing its strengths. Overall, "Buddhist Scriptures" is deemed an essential addition to any personal collection or academic study, offering an accessible pathway into the vast and profound insights of Buddhism, although readers should be aware of its limitations regarding historical context. **
