Product Details
- Tertullian of Carthage was the most formidable polemical theologian of the early Latin Church — a trained lawyer who brought forensic precision and relentless logical force to the defense of orthodox Christianity against the heretical movements that threatened to overwhelm the Church in the late second and early third centuries. This volume gathers nine of his anti-heretical works — the complete record of his engagement with Gnosticism, Marcionism, Modalism, and related heresies. The Prescription Against Heretics is the logical foundation of the collection. Tertullian's argument is essentially legal: before any debate about scripture can begin, the question of standing must be settled. The scriptures belong to the Church, which received them from the apostles. Heretics have no right to appeal to texts they did not receive. It is one of the most original and influential arguments in the history of Christian theology. The Five Books Against Marcion is Tertullian's longest and most sustained work — a comprehensive refutation of the most dangerous heretic of the second century. Marcion had rejected the entire Old Testament, posited two Gods, and produced his own edited canon. Tertullian's five-book response defends the unity of the two Testaments, the identity of the Creator with the Father of Christ, and the integrity of scripture.Against Hermogenes defends creation out of nothing. Against the Valentinians engages Gnostic mythology. On the Flesh of Christ and On the Resurrection of the Flesh defend the genuine humanity of Christ and the bodily resurrection against docetic denial. Against Praxeas is Tertullian's most important contribution to Trinitarian theology — the work in which he coined trinitas, persona, and substantia, the Latin vocabulary that would define Western Trinitarian doctrine for centuries. Scorpiace addresses those who used Gnostic arguments to justify apostasy under persecution. The volume closes with an appendix surveying heresies from Simon Magus onward.Together these nine works display Tertullian at his most theologically creative — arguing, constructing, and defending with a force and originality that shaped Western theology for centuries and gave Latin Christianity much of its enduring vocabulary. This edition is part of The Patristic Classics Library, a newly typeset series presenting the foundational writings of the early Church in clean, readable editions for students, pastors, historians, and general readers. The texts are drawn from the classic Ante-Nicene Fathers series and are presented here in a fresh typesetting designed for comfortable reading in modern print format. To read Tertullian against the heretics is to witness the early Church defining itself — finding its vocabulary and refusing with magnificent stubbornness to surrender the apostolic faith to those who would replace it with something more philosophically fashionable.
