The base rails of the rack clamp to the outside vertical edges of the door, but only as an aid to help in alignment. The rack has a simple and intuitive design that makes it easy to install and use. It comes with all the necessary hardware and instructions, and the installation process is straightforward. The adhesive is necessary to hold the rack in place and prevent it from bouncing while in use. However, the rack is not compatible with all types of vans. It will not fit a 3500 Sprinter van or Airstream unless the door is very close in size to the door on a ProMaster. It will probably fit on a Ford Transit van with rear windows, but it is not recommended for a high roof. It is not compatible with a Nissan NV 200. Overall, the Thule Elite Van XT Bike Rack is a solid and reliable product that is perfect for those who want to carry bicycles on the back of their van.
