The blue and black covers on the bearings are nylon. The bearings are spec'd at ABEC 9, the tightest tolerance a bearing can have. The cleaning of the bearings depends on the conditions that you ride, but every 4-6 months is often sufficient. Any lubrication that is specifically designed for ceramics will work best. Overall, the bearings are good quality and will work well for most people. However, there are some mixed reviews on the bearings, with some saying they didn't roll as far as expected, one defective bearing right out of the box, and one bearing failing in less than 20 hours of use.
