MOOG Tabletop Synthesizers MOD-SUBH Editorial Review
The MOOG Subharmonicon is an intriguing addition to the world of semi-modular analog synthesizers, particularly appealing to those eager to explore rhythm and sound interplay. Musicians and sound designers appreciate its accessible yet versatile nature, allowing for an engaging and intuitive creative process. Users find that simply manipulating the device yields interesting and convincing rhythmic patterns, even with a straightforward setup. The randomization features can be calibrated for less erratic behavior, offering the ability to create stable patterns while still embracing the nuances of odd meters and polyrhythms. While the sequencer offers some limitations regarding CV customization, these do not detract significantly from its utility in rhythm creation. Users can effectively utilize its 4-note quantization to shape melodic outputs. The real magic, however, unfolds when the Subharmonicon is integrated with other pieces of equipment, where its output can introduce a dynamic layer of unpredictability to a patch, thanks to the dual clock inputs that enable further complexity in its operation. The standout feature highlighted by users is the quality of the sine wave oscillator output. By stripping modulation and distortion, it delivers a surprisingly robust and smooth tone, making it a solid choice for bass sounds. Overall, the Subharmonicon stands out as a capable stand-alone instrument and an excellent entry point for newcomers to the world of analog synthesis despite its higher price point. ####
