Although many details changed during the writing process of the story of Beren and Luthien, who played a major role in the development of the Silmarillion, in which Tolkien tells the epics and myths of the Antiquity, their shadowed love always remained: Beren was a mortal Man, and Luthien was an immortal Elf. Her father, an important Elven lord, was against his daughter being with Beren, and if he wanted to marry Luthien, Beren had to fulfill an impossible task. Beren, along with Luthien, would attempt to steal the Silmaril, the worst of the villains, the Black Enemy, the most valuable jewel from Melkor, also known as Morgoth.In this book, Christopher Tolkien takes step by step the process from the date the story of Beren and Luthien was first written to its state in The Silmarillion, revealing how Middle Earth turned into the most important love story and how it took up an increasingly larger place in this universe.
