- Ekspresyonizm Almanya'da Birinci Dünya Savaşı öncesinde gelişmiş, sanat dallarının hepsinde etkili olmuştu. Edebiyat akımı olarak 1909 civarında Berlin'de başladı ve ardında izi 1920'lere dek sürülebilecek bir miras bıraktı. Ele avuca sığmayan, tarife gelmeyen ekspresyonizm naif bir esrikliğin, sinik bir kuşkuculuğun, Nietzsche'ci bir bireyciliğin ve sosyalist kardeşliğin idealizminin yanı sıra kent yaşamının dehşetini, uygarlığın çöküşüne ilişkin kıyamet öngörülerini, ilkel içgüdülerin yüceltilmesini ve liberalizm karşıtı bir nihilizmi de barındırıyordu içinde. Ordu, okul, ataerkil aile ve imparatorluk gibi kurumların yerleşik otoritesine karşı çıkan Alman ekspresyonistler yoksulların, ezilmişlerin, akıl hastalarının, toplum dışına itilmişlerin yanında yer almışlardı. Ekspresyonistler doğanın ve toplumun nesnel bir bakış açısıyla ele alınmasına karşı çıkıyor, içsel gerçeğin yansıtılmasını savunuyorlardı. Yeni bir düzenin ve toplumsal geleneğin zincirinden kurtulmuş, dünyaya sınırsız bir öznellikle bakan yeni bir insanın yaratılmasında öncülük yapma gibi yüce bir görev biçmişlerdi kendilerine.
