- 1847-1858 yılları arasında Anadolu'yu baştan başa gezen Pierre de Tchihatchef 19. yüzyılın çığır açan jeologlarından biridir. Sekiz ciltlik Asie Mineure (Küçük Asya) adlı dev eseri bu gezinin ürünüdür. İstanbul'a ilk kez 1845 yılında Rus elçiliğinde ataşe olarak gelen Tchihatchef Boğaziçi'ne ayrı bir ilgi gösterir. Bölgeyi geniş bir çerçevede ele alarak Adalar'ı, Bitinya'yı, Trakya ve Kocaeli'yi de yaptığı incelemelere dahil eder. İstanbul'un fiziki yapısı, iklimi, bitki örtüsü, hayvanları ve suları hakkında da detaylı gözlemlerde bulunan yazar, Strabon, Homeros gibi Antikçağ yazarlarının aktardığı bilgileri, hikayeleri, efsaneleri de anlatısına katarak bizi zaman içinde keyifli bir yolculuğa çıkarıyor. İstanbul ve Boğaziçi, yazıldığı döneme dair kıymetli bilgilerin yanı sıra, içerdiği çok sayıda görsel malzeme ve büyük ölçekli bir Boğaziçi haritasıyla 170 yıl öncesinin İstanbul ve Boğaziçi'ni gözümüzde canlandırmamızı sağlıyor.Pierre de Tchihatchef (1754-1801) St. Petersburg yakınlarında bir malikanede asil bir ailenin çocuğu olarak doğdu. Freiburg, Münih, Berlin ve Paris'te jeoloji eğitimi aldı. İlk jeolojik etütlerini Güney İtalya ve Güney Fransa'da yaptı. İlk büyük araştırma gezisini Sibirya, Altay Dağları'na gerçekleştirdi. 1845-1848 yılları arasında İstanbul'da, Rus elçiliğinde ataşe olarak çalıştı. Bu dönemde yerel ağızlarıyla birlikte Türkçe de öğrendi. Daha sonra hayatını tamamen incelemelerine adayarak Anadolu ve civarında toplam 14 bin kilometrelik bir güzergahı yaya kat etti. Bu inceleme gezilerinin sonuçlarını sekiz ciltlik Asie Mineure, description physique, statistique et archeologique de cette contree (Küçük Asya, Bu Ülkenin Fiziki, İstatistiki ve Arkeolojik Tasviri) adlı dev eserinde topladı.
