  • In this psychological thriller novel dated 1952, Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac tell the story of a man who teams up with his girlfriend and tries to kill his wife. Sales representative Fernand decides to get rid of his wife Mireille by marrying his doctor girlfriend Lucienne with the money they will receive from life insurance and settling in Antibes in southern France. The two come up with a plan that will give the impression that the victim accidentally drowned. Even though the plan is implemented successfully, at some point things start to go wrong. While the strange events that follow each other gradually blur the line separating the victim and the criminal, the novel takes on a semi-fantastic atmosphere. Boileau and Narcejac, who always think about the evil of human nature and see the weakness of character as a part of this evil, focus on what goes through the mind of the character Fernand, whom they flesh out with their weaknesses, flaws and regrets. The events gradually get out of hand, disrupting Fernand's balance and weakening his connection with reality day by day. It inspired the film Les Diaboliques, which went down in cinema history as the masterpiece of the evil French director Henri-Georges Clouzot. Show more
