- Uygarlık kavramı, çoğu zaman kültür kavramı ile eşdeğer bir şekilde kullanılmaktadır. Ne var ki bu iki kavram aslen eş anlamlı değildir. Ziraat sözcüğü ile akraba olan kültür kelimesi Latince Colere fiilinden türemiştir ve ekip biçmek, toprağı işlemek gibi anlamlar taşımaktadır. Uygarlık kelimesi ise yurttaş (civis) ve devlet (civitas) ile aynı kökten gelmekte, kentlilik, kentte yaşam ve kent kuralları gibi anlamları taşımaktadır. Kelimelerin tarihsel kökenine bakıldığında dahi uygarlık kavramının kültürü de kapsayan bir küme olduğu ve kültür kavramının ötesinde bir unsur olduğu anlaşılmaktadır. Kavramların günümüzdeki anlamları incelendiğinde bu fark daha belirgin olarak göze çarpmaktadır. Örneğin Alfred Weber'e göre uygarlık uygulamalı teknikler bütünü ve doğa üzerinde etki meydana getiren araçların toplamı olarak tanımlanabilir; kültür ise normatif ilkeler; değerler ve idealler, tek kelimeyle zihniyettir. Kültür, bilinçli değil, kendiliğinden öğrenilir. Nesilden nesle doğal yollarla aktarılır, alışkanlık haline gelir, değişime kapalıdır, tutucudur, zamanla katılaşır ve fanatikçe savunulur. Uygarlık bu şekilde inşa edilemez, geliştirilemez ve savunulamaz. Onun bir bilinci ve amacı olmalıdır. Kültür kendini korumaya odaklıyken uygarlık, gelişmek ve değişime açık olmak zorundadır. Kültür duygulara, anılara ve geçmişe dayanır; uygarlıkta ise rasyonellik ve gelecek planları devrededir. Bu noktada uygarlığın ölçülebilir bir kavram olduğu söylenebilir, ancak kültür için aynı şey söz konusu değildir. Gelişmiş ve gelişmemiş kültürlerden söz etmek anlamsızdır. Mozart'ın müziğinin Afrika müziğine tercih edilmesi veya tam tersi, insanların beğenileri ile ilgili bir tutumdur. Uygarlık ise ölçülebilir ve kronolojik bir sıraya yerleştirilebilir.
