- Shelley's father, who was also the publisher, refused to publish Mathilda, which he wrote in 1820, and the text was never published until 1959, long after the author's death. So much so that even Mary Shelley, who lost her husband shortly after completing the novel, began to think that the text was unlucky.This short but quite striking novel tells the short and tragic life of Mathilda, who lost her mother at birth and was raised by her cold-tempered aunt when her father left her. All alone and loveless, Mathilda wants is a caring parent, instead receiving distorted, insane love from her father, who returns after years of waiting.
