En çok Düşünüyorum, öyleyse varım sözüyle hatırlansa da düşünce tarihine yaptığı esas katkı, kendinden sonraki dönemin yeni sorularının da çıkış noktası olan bu sentezdir.Descartes, Cizvit okulu ve Poitiers Üniversitesi'nde felsefe ve matematik dahil mükemmel bir eğitim almıştır. Doğru ve güvenilir sonuçlar getiren matematiğin kazandığı sarsılmazlığı ve hızı, bilgiyi bilme yolu olarak en sistemli biçimde model alan on yedinci yüzyıl felsefecisidir. Böylece matematik dehasıyla Kartezyen koordinat sistemini ve analitik geometriyi kurarken felsefede de on yedinci yüzyıl rasyonalizminin temelini atmıştır.Çekişmeci bir karaktere sahip olan ve fikirleri nedeniyle kendisini eleştirenlerle sık sık polemiklere giren Descartes, Kilise tarafından cezalandırılmamak için yazdıklarını otuz yıl süreyle ortaya çıkarmamıştır. Ömrünün büyük kısmını anayurdundan uzakta, kendini daha özgür hissettiği ve adreslerini sıkı sıkıya gizlediği otuz yedi ayrı yerde geçirmiştir. Çok az kitap okumuş, Avrupa'nın bilim ve felsefe camiasıyla ilişkisini mektuplar vasıtasıyla sürdürmüştür. Bir-iki yakın arkadaşı dışında yalnız, coğrafi olarak tecrit edilmiş, çekişmelerle dolu bir yaşamın burukluğuyla dolu, matematik ve felsefe dehasını kabul ettirememiş olarak ölmüştür. Dehası ve önemi ölümünden yıllar sonra anlaşılmış, bir yandan takipçileri Kartezyenler adıyla bir tür tarikat oluştururken öte yandan Kilise kitaplarını yasaklamıştır. Aynı kaderi paylaşan naaşı, İsveç'teki ölümünün ardından yıllar sonra, nihayet altıncı kabrinde Paris'teki ebedi istirahatgahını bulmuştur.Descartes'ın teolojiye, felsefeye ve bilime yönelik geniş kapsamlı ilgisini ele alarak kariyeri boyunca entelektüel gelişmesinin izini süren elinizdeki kitabın yazarı Desmond M.
