Foucault hem kendisinin hem de başkalarının herhangi bir kategorik çerçevenin içine yerleştirilerek nitelenmesinden ya da yargılanmasından son derece rahatsızlık duyardı mutlaka ama onu anlatmaya giriştiğimizde bulabileceğimiz en uygun sıfat yine de, kendisinin kullandığı Düşünce Sistemleri Tarihçisi olacaktır.Foucault’nun düşünce hayatına bütünüyle egemen olan üç ana kavram vardır. Çözümlemelerinin “düşünce sistemleri”ne ilişkin olanları arkeoloji, “iktidar biçimleri”ne ilişkin olanları geneoloji, “kendine özen gösterme”ye ilişkin olanları ise etik ile belirlenen, üç ayrı dönemde yapılır. Foucault için Klasik olan xvıı. ve xvııı. yüzyıllar ile Modern olan xıx. ve xx. yüzyıllarda, bu dönemlere ilişkin oluşumları hem teorik hem de pratik alanlarında yöneten epistemelerin farklı olması nedeniyle, farklı biçimlerde görünen ve incelenen aynı pozitifliklerin (hayat, emek, dil) bilgisi hakkında gerçekleştirilen derinlemesine bir çözümleme yönteminin adıdır Bilginin Arkeolojisi. Bu çözümleme yöntemi, onun alt başlığı “psikiyatrinin arkeolojisi” olan Klasik Çağda Deliliğin Tarihi, alt başlığı “tıbbi bakışın arkeolojisi” olan Kliniğin Doğuşu ve yine alt başlığı “insan bilimlerinin arkeolojisi” olan Kelimeler ve Şeyler adlı eserlerinde uygulanmıştır.Bilginin Arkeolojisi’nde Foucault’nun göstermeye çalıştığı şey, dilin bölgesi, arşivin anlamı ya da söylenmiş olan şeylerin alanıdır.
